Week 2 Student Teaching
Over the weekend I created a powerpoint presentation about genres. We also listened to an example of every genre we went over. I found out about some pretty useful tech tools. Before I gave the presentation I got a pre-assessment about how many genres students knew and that gave me an idea about their prior knowledge to genres. The students didn't respond in the way I expected them to. Most of them did not really like the music. They were not interested in other music whatsoever. Mostly just interested in rap. This gave me an idea of what to do for my ed tpa. The next lesson I created a kahoot on the genres which the students liked a lot. We are on A/B days so I didn't see them for two days. They retained a lot of information and pretty well on the quiz. The more I talk to my cooperating teacher the more we come up with ideas. Also this week I talked to the band teacher and she said that she could use some help during the day with the concert band. This could be a useful opportunity because I havent had much experience with band. This week I've definitely taught a lot more. Pretty much every class this week I've co-taught with the teacher. One valuable thing I learned was to make sure you always have a backup plan for your class if they get everything done. My cooperating teacher had a sub and I had to teach a class. We ended early and the class didn't have anything to do. It was the worst 20 minutes of my life! seriously they were so loud and wild, it was insane! Anyways lesson learned. ALWAYS have a backup.
It is unfortunate that your cooperating teacher had a sub so early in your experience. Student behavior is almost always worse with a substitute. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but you learned from it. A backup to your backup is always a good idea, too :-). YouTube can be a great asset for backups. Bookmark a couple of interesting music videos. I hope next week goes better for you!
ReplyDeleteTime management is one area that student teachers struggle with. Knowing how long things will take and having more to do than you think you need available will come with more experience. At least you learned this lesson. I wish you had talked more about what happened in that 20 minutes and how you responded.
